Getting there and choosing your base
- Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC): In the centre-west of the island, south of Duong Dong, with frequent flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi plus some international routes. Foreign visitors flying in have been eligible for a 30-day stay without a visa, but check the current rules before travel.
- Bai Vong port (east coast): Fast ferries and hydrofoils arrive from Rach Gia and Ha Tien. The port is on the opposite side of the island from most west-coast hotels, so plan a transfer across.
Areas to consider
Long Beach (Bai Truong)
Fits most first visits, with a long sandy shore, places to eat on foot and Duong Dong nearby. Ask how close the property is to the north end near town or the quieter south end, which is several kilometres down the coast.
Duong Dong town
Fits budget travellers wanting the night market, seafood restaurants and the island's banks. Most town lodgings are not on the beach; confirm the walk to the nearest sand.
Northern west coast (Ong Lang to Ganh Dau)
Fits families visiting the safari park and theme parks, or anyone wanting quieter coves backed by forest. Check whether the hotel provides transport, as public bus routes here have changed and fares may now apply.
South coast (Sao Beach and An Thoi)
Fits travellers focused on the best-known white-sand beach, boat trips to the An Thoi islands and the Hon Thom cable car. Look at how far you will be from shops and restaurants; some southern developments are large and sparsely occupied.
When to go
November to March is the dry high season, with calm seas and the most reliable sunshine; April and May are hotter but quieter. The monsoon brings rough water and heavy showers from around May to October, peaking in July to September, and affordable rooms are often fully booked in January and February.
Before choosing a room
- Pollution is a problem away from managed resort frontages; check recent photos and comments on how often the hotel's own stretch of beach is cleaned.
- Ask for a west-facing room on the west coast if you want the sunset, and confirm the view is not blocked by neighbouring construction.
- If arriving by boat at Bai Vong, ask whether the hotel arranges pick-up there, because most transfer deals cover only the airport.
