Getting there and choosing your base

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN): Vietnam's busiest airport, only a few kilometres from the centre. Public buses link the airport with the Ham Nghi interchange beside Ben Thanh Market, so central District 1 hotels are easy to reach without a taxi.
Saigon railway station (Ga Sài Gòn): On Cach Mang Thang Tam street north-west of the centre, the southern end of the Reunification line from Hanoi. It is a short taxi ride from the main hotel districts, so it rarely needs to influence where you stay.
Pham Ngu Lao tourist bus stands: Most tourist coaches, including services to and from Cambodia, start and finish on Pham Ngu Lao in District 1. Staying nearby suits a late arrival or early departure by road.

Areas to consider

Central District 1 (Ben Thanh and Dong Khoi)

Fits short stays built around the colonial buildings, museums, markets and the metro's city-centre stations. Compare the walk to the nearest metro station or the Ham Nghi bus interchange, because pavements are crowded and the heat makes long walks tiring.

Pham Ngu Lao and Bui Vien

Fits backpackers and budget travellers who want cheap food, bars and tour desks on the doorstep. Ask which side of the building the room faces; Bui Vien's bars run late and street noise carries into front rooms.

District 3

Fits repeat visitors who want leafier residential streets, consulates and local restaurants just west of District 1. Check the distance to District 1 by ride-hailing at evening rush hour rather than on a map, as traffic is the limiting factor.

Thao Dien (former District 2)

Fits longer stays and families wanting villas, serviced apartments and an expat café scene by the river. Confirm how you will reach the centre; the area is about a fifteen-minute taxi ride away without traffic and longer at peak times.

When to go

The dry season runs from about December to May, and December to February is the most comfortable period; March and April are the hottest months. Rain from May to October usually comes as short, heavy afternoon showers, and Tết in late January or February shuts many family businesses while domestic travel peaks.

Before choosing a room

Many independent hotels restrict overnight visitors who are not registered guests; if this matters, read the guest policy before booking rather than at reception.
Vietnam reorganised local government in 2025 and the old district numbers are being replaced by ward names in official addresses, so match the hotel's map pin to its listing rather than relying on 'District 1' in the name.
Rooms on low floors facing main roads take the full noise of motorbike traffic from early morning; ask for a higher floor or a rear-facing room.
