Getting there and choosing your base
- Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR): Around 30 km south of the city, on a former military airbase. The road north passes Bai Dai (Long Beach), so resorts there are much closer to the airport than city hotels; airport buses and fixed-rate taxis run into town.
- Nha Trang railway station: About 1 km from the centre on the Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City line. From the south, the daytime run is short enough that a sleeper is not needed.
Areas to consider
Southern Tran Phu strip
Fits travellers who want dive schools, tour agencies, foreign-language menus and nightlife together. Signage and menus here are often in Russian before English; check reviews from guests with your language if service matters to you.
Central beachfront
Fits those who want an international chain hotel with direct views of the bay. The beach is across the busy avenue from the hotels, so ask about crossing points and whether the hotel has its own beach area.
North of the Cai River (Hon Chong and Bai Duong)
Fits visitors interested in the Po Nagar towers, local seafood restaurants and quieter beaches. Check how the beach nearest the hotel looks in recent photos, as sewage channels spoil parts of Bai Duong.
Bai Dai (Long Beach)
Fits resort holidays near the airport, with surfing and seafood shacks rather than a town. Resorts are still being built along this stretch; ask about construction next door and how often the shuttle runs into the city.
When to go
The rainy season falls between about September and mid-December, when strong onshore winds churn the sea and the beach loses its appeal. The national tourism board recommends January to August for beach and diving weather, and summer school holidays bring in many Vietnamese families, making rooms harder to find.
Before choosing a room
- Resorts on Hon Tre island keep most of the island's beaches for their own guests and depend on transfers across the bay; confirm how those transfers currently run and the last crossing back from the mainland.
- For a city hotel, ask whether the hotel runs its own airport shuttle or collects from the airport bus terminus, because Cam Ranh is a long and costly taxi ride.
- If diving is the main purpose, check whether the hotel works with a dive operator that collects from the door for early boat departures.
