Kuala Lumpur travel guide

Kuala Lumpur is spread out and hot, so the rail line closest to your hotel matters more than the district name. The Golden Triangle, covering Bukit Bintang and KLCC, holds most mid-range and upscale hotels, while Chinatown and Brickfields are the older and transport-hub areas.

Getting there and choosing your base

  • KLIA and KLIA2: The KLIA Ekspres runs non-stop to KL Sentral in about 28 minutes; the KLIA Transit takes slightly longer with stops on the way. A hotel near KL Sentral makes arrival and departure days simple.
  • Intercity trains: ETS trains from northern Malaysia and connections from Singapore and Thailand all call at KL Sentral.
  • Long-distance coaches: Southbound coaches to Malacca, Johor Bahru and Singapore use Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), linked to Bandar Tasik Selatan station on the KLIA Transit line; northbound coaches leave from Pudu Sentral on the edge of Chinatown, where taxis may refuse the meter.

Areas to consider

Bukit Bintang

Suits malls, food streets and nightlife, served by the MRT and Monorail. Light sleepers should ask about noise from Jalan Alor or the main road.

KLCC

Suits stays near the Petronas Towers, KLCC Park and Suria KLCC, mostly in polished high-rise hotels. Check whether a covered walkway connects the hotel, which helps in the heat and the afternoon rain.

Chinatown and Pasar Seni

Suits heritage shophouses, Central Market and good-value hotels. Converted shophouse rooms can be small or windowless; check the room description.

Brickfields and KL Sentral

Suits short stays and early flights, next to the airport train and Little India. Check the actual walk from KL Sentral to the hotel door.

When to go

Tropical all year. October to March brings heavier monsoon rain and occasional flash floods. Haze from regional forest fires can occur between May and October.

Before choosing a room

  • Windowless rooms or rooms with an internal window are common in budget and shophouse hotels. Check before booking.
  • Malaysia charges foreign guests a tourism tax per room per night, often collected at check-in separately from the booked price.
  • Serviced apartments may ask for a refundable cash deposit. Confirm the amount in advance.
