Getting there and choosing your base
- Road from Ipoh via Simpang Pulai: Buses from Ipoh's Amanjaya terminal and drivers leaving the North-South Expressway at Simpang Pulai come up Route 145, reaching Kampung Raja first. This road is in better condition than the Tapah route, so northern towns are the quicker reach from this side.
- Road from Tapah: The older Route 59 climbs from the Tapah exit to Ringlet, then on to Tanah Rata. It is winding, so anyone prone to car sickness may prefer the Simpang Pulai approach.
- Tanah Rata bus station: Coaches from Kuala Lumpur's TBS terminal, Penang and Singapore, and the daily bus from Taman Negara, finish here. A guesthouse within walking distance saves a taxi, as drivers rarely use meters.
Areas to consider
Tanah Rata
Suits backpackers and walkers, being the main town with guesthouses, cafés and the trailheads for most numbered jungle paths. Many cheap rooms sit above shops on the main street, so ask whether yours faces the road or the back.
Brinchang
Suits travellers who want the weekend night market, strawberry farms and the road up Gunung Brinchang, about 4 km north of Tanah Rata. The night market runs only on Friday and Saturday outside holiday periods, so check its dates if it is the reason you are staying here.
Kea Farm and Tringkap
Suits drivers and families visiting the honey, vegetable and strawberry farms strung along the main road north of Brinchang. These settlements are spread out with few places to eat on foot, so confirm whether the hotel serves dinner.
Ringlet and Bertam Valley
Suits those arriving via Tapah who want quieter nights near Sultan Abu Bakar Lake at the southern end of the district. The tourist bus does not run south of Tanah Rata, so check how you would reach the trails and town without a car.
When to go
The air is mild all year, with daytime highs rarely above about 25°C and nights that can fall to around 12°C. Rain is frequent and heavy whatever the month, which makes trails slippery. Holiday periods bring large numbers of visitors up from Kuala Lumpur and the lowland cities, when the night market opens every evening and rooms go quickly.
Before choosing a room
- Do not assume the room is heated; check that the bed has thick blankets and that the shower has reliable hot water.
- Hillside properties can involve steep driveways and many stairs; ask about luggage access if the hotel is away from the main road.
- If you plan to hike, choose a hotel or guesthouse that will note which trail you have taken and when you expect to return, as Wikivoyage advises.
