Genting Highlands travel guide

Genting Highlands is a mountaintop resort on the Pahang–Selangor border, about an hour's drive north-east of Kuala Lumpur along the Karak Highway. Built from 1965 rather than in the colonial era, it centres on Resorts World Genting, home to Malaysia's only legal casinos, theme parks and malls, linked by covered walkways. Gondolas connect the summit with Awana and Gohtong Jaya lower down.

Getting there and choosing your base

  • Coaches from Kuala Lumpur: Buses run from KL Sentral, Pudu Sentral, Gombak, TBS and other points, mostly ending at the terminal beside the Awana Skyway lower station, from which the gondola climbs to SkyAvenue. Weekend seats sell out, so book the return as early as your room.
  • Batang Kali station: Travellers coming by train from the north can change at Batang Kali for a shuttle bus, which runs only a few times a day. Check that its timetable fits your check-in before relying on it.
  • By car or taxi: Drivers take the Karak Highway up the mountain; hotels at the summit and the outlying resorts all have road access, and ride-hailing works across the highlands.

Areas to consider

SkyAvenue and First World

Suits budget-minded visitors and families wanting the indoor theme park, malls and the cable car on their doorstep. The largest hotel here has thousands of rooms, so check-in queues can be long on Fridays and holidays; check whether online check-in is offered.

Genting Grand and Crockfords

Suits casino visitors and those paying for more space and quieter corridors at the top of the complex. Room rates and inclusions vary by membership tier, so compare the public rate with any Genting Rewards offer before paying.

Awana

Suits golfers and walkers, with the resort's golf course and jungle trails partway down the hill beside the gondola station. Awana is outside the covered walkway network, so check gondola hours if you plan to return late from the summit.

Gohtong Jaya and independent hotels

Suit travellers priced out of the summit during holidays, with hotels lower on the mountain at the base of the Genting Skyway. These hotels sit apart from the main complex; confirm whether a free shuttle runs to Resorts World and how often.

When to go

At around 1,800 m the summit is roughly 10°C cooler than Kuala Lumpur, often in cloud, with long spells of drizzle. Weekday rooms in quiet periods can be cheap, but the resort fills at weekends, on public holidays and during school breaks and festive seasons, when outlying hotels are the fallback.

Before choosing a room

  • Hotel rooms at the summit are unheated and nights can be chilly, so check bedding or pack warm clothes.
  • Resorts World hotels share one central reservations system; check whether a cheaper rate in another building of the complex suits you before booking.
  • Casino entry requires visitors to be over 21 and observe a dress code; if gambling is part of the plan, confirm what your package includes.
