Getting there and choosing your base

Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA): Handles all jet flights, including near-hourly services from Jakarta. The airport train runs to Tugu station, and DAMRI buses also go to the city; trains can fill up, so book ahead and favour a hotel near Tugu if you arrive late.
Adisucipto Airport (JOG): The old airport, about 8 km east of the city, now used only by a few domestic propeller flights. Check which airport your ticket names before arranging a pick-up.
Tugu and Lempuyangan stations: Tugu, just off Malioboro, is the main station for trains from Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya and Solo. Lempuyangan, a little to the east, handles some other services, so check which one your train uses.

Areas to consider

Malioboro and Sosrowijayan

Suits budget travellers who want the railway station, street food and shopping on foot. The alleys around Sosrowijayan vary in character from lane to lane, so read recent guest comments about the specific gang before booking.

Prawirotaman

Suits travellers who prefer a quieter base about 3 km south of the centre, with cafés and guesthouses used to foreign guests. Street bars near the corner of Jalan Parangtritis play loud music, so ask how far the room is from that junction.

Around the Kraton

Suits visitors focused on the palace, the alun-alun squares and the heritage buildings of the old city. Traffic around the palace squares backs up badly during school holidays, so check where cars and taxis can drop you.

Sleman and the Merapi slopes

Suits travellers who want cooler air and countryside to the north of the city on the way to Mount Merapi. Many roads up here are unpaved, so confirm the hotel can be reached easily without your own motorbike.

When to go

Java's dry season runs roughly from April to October and the wet season from November to March. Indonesian school holidays bring heavy domestic crowds to Malioboro, and around Lebaran at the end of Ramadan transport across the country is packed, so book rooms and train seats early for those dates.

Before choosing a room

If you will use the airport train, compare the walk or ride from Tugu station to the hotel rather than the distance from the airport.
Ask whether the rate includes tax and service charges, which are commonly added on top of the quoted price in Indonesian hotels.
Budget losmen rooms can be basic; check whether the bathroom is private and whether the room has air-conditioning or only a fan.
