Getting there and choosing your base
- Whoosh high-speed rail (Padalarang and Tegalluar): The fast line from Jakarta's Halim stops at two stations well outside the city: Padalarang to the north-west and Tegalluar to the south-east. Feeder trains run from Padalarang to Bandung station, so a central hotel near the station works best on this route.
- Bandung station (Stasiun Hall): Regular KAI trains from Jakarta and the southern line take longer but arrive in Central Bandung itself.
- Kertajati International Airport (KJT): Most jet flights moved here in 2023; it is in Majalengka, almost 90 km away by road. Husein Sastranegara, near the centre, has handled far fewer flights since, and airport assignments have changed more than once, so check which airport your ticket names.
Areas to consider
Central Bandung (Asia Afrika and Braga)
Suits first-time visitors drawn to the Art Deco buildings, the grand old hotels and easy access to the station. Business hotels here vary widely in quality, so compare recent photos of the rooms rather than the star rating.
Dago and North Bandung
Suits travellers after hillside cafés with city views, factory outlets and cooler air above the centre. Hotels high on the slope can be a slow drive from town at weekends, so check the route along Jalan Dago before booking.
Setiabudhi and Ciumbuleuit
Suits those wanting larger resort-style hotels in Northwest Bandung, on the way up to Lembang. Ask whether the hotel runs a shuttle into the centre, which saves relying on ride-hailing for every outing.
Pasteur
Suits drivers arriving on the toll road from Jakarta and business trips, with many business hotels around the Pasteur toll gate. The area is mostly main roads and offices, so look at what restaurants are within walking distance.
When to go
Occupancy and prices climb at weekends, and more so on long weekends and public holidays, when Jakarta residents drive up in large numbers; midweek stays are usually easier to book. Rain is heaviest from about November to April and lightest from July to September. Indonesia's June–July and December school holidays are peak periods nationwide.
Before choosing a room
- Weekend rates can differ sharply from weekday ones in this weekend-break city, so price both before fixing dates.
- Most restaurants and cafés do not serve alcohol; if you want a drink with dinner, check whether the hotel has a bar.
- Sharia hotels and small family-run places may apply stricter rules for unmarried couples, so read the house policy before booking.
