Malang travel guide

Malang, East Java's second city, sits among mountains about 95 km south of Surabaya, with the cool hill town of Batu to the north-west and Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park to the east. Its railway station is right in the centre, while the long-distance bus terminal and the small airport lie on the edges of the city.

Getting there and choosing your base

  • Malang railway station: Central, with many daily trains from Surabaya and overnight services from Jakarta and Bandung. Arriving by rail puts you much closer to most hotels than the Arjosari bus terminal does.
  • Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport (MLG): A small airport east of the city with a few daily flights, mostly from Jakarta, plus Bali. Gojek cannot collect at the terminal, so take a taxi or ask the hotel about a pick-up.
  • Juanda Airport, Surabaya (SUB): Far more flights land here. Shuttle vans and buses cover the 95 km, but the road often takes several hours, so a late landing may justify a night in Surabaya first.

Areas to consider

City centre (around Tugu and the station)

Suits short stays, rail arrivals and walks through the Dutch-era downtown. With an early train, check the walk to the station and whether the hotel will hold bags after check-out.

Ijen Boulevard

Suits travellers who prefer quieter streets lined with bougainvillea and colonial houses, a little west of the centre. Some lodgings here are converted houses, so ask about room size and whether bathrooms are shared.

Jalan Veteran and Malang Town Square

Suits visitors who want malls, food courts and shops close by. This area lies north-west of the old centre, so look at the distance to the station before booking around a rail trip.

Batu

Suits cooler air, apple orchards and theme parks in a hill town on the slopes of Mount Welirang. Batu fills with trippers from Malang and Surabaya at weekends and in school holidays, so book ahead or come midweek.

When to go

Rain falls mostly between November and April, and July to September is the driest spell. Nights in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park can drop close to freezing, which matters if you plan a pre-dawn trip from a Malang hotel. Weekends and school holidays bring crowds from Surabaya to Batu and the surrounding hills.

Before choosing a room

  • If you book a sunrise trip to Bromo, ask about a packed breakfast and whether you can keep the room or store bags until you are back.
  • Batu is noticeably cooler than lowland Java, so check for hot water and warm bedding rather than air-conditioning.
  • Older budget rooms in the city can be tired; read recent comments on mattresses and on noise from main roads.
