Getting there and choosing your base

Kalka and the Kalka–Shimla Railway: Take a broad-gauge train such as the Shatabdi from New Delhi to Kalka, then the mountain line through 102 tunnels. Most mountain trains can only be reserved 30 days ahead; the Shivalik Deluxe Express opens 120 days ahead.
Shimla Airport (Jubbarhatti) and Chandigarh: Shimla's airport, 22 km out, has a short runway that takes only turboprops. Chandigarh, about 120 km away on better roads, has far more flights, though winter fog can delay them.
New ISBT, Tutikandi: Buses from Delhi, Chandigarh, Manali and Mandi stop at this terminal about 5 km from the centre, linked by local buses to the Old ISBT. Touts meet new arrivals here and at the station, so have the hotel booked beforehand.

Areas to consider

The Mall and the Ridge

The Victorian heart of town, for walking to Christ Church, Scandal Point and the main shops. No cars run here, so check where the nearest drop-off is and whether the hotel sends porters.

Lakkar Bazaar and Longwood

Just north-east of the Ridge, near the handicraft market and the path towards Jakhoo Hill. Paths from here are steep; ask how many steps there are between the road and reception.

Chhota Shimla, Circular Road and Kaithu

Cheaper rooms outside the core, around Victory Tunnel and towards Kali Bari. Circular Road carries heavy traffic, so a room set back from it will be quieter.

Mashobra, Kufri and Shoghi

Resorts and homestays outside the city for quiet and forest views. Every trip into Shimla means a taxi, and winter snowfall affects these roads, so ask how access is kept open in December to February.

When to go

May and June are peak months, when visitors from the plains swell the population and prices rise. July to September brings continuous rain. Winter, from December to February, is cold with frequent snow and temperatures below freezing; spring and autumn are clearer and less crowded.

Before choosing a room

Ask whether room heating is included in the rate or charged per night, especially from November to February.
Booking through a tout can add their commission to your room rate, so reserve directly before you arrive.
Match non-refundable room bookings to train reservations, which open only 30 days before travel on most mountain services.
