Bengaluru travel guide

Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, is a sprawling city with a milder climate than most of India. The old market district around Majestic and the British-era Cantonment around MG Road form the centre, while IT parks spread east to Whitefield and south to Electronic City. Kempegowda International Airport lies about 40 km north at Devanahalli.

Getting there and choosing your base

  • Kempegowda International Airport (BLR): Two terminals, about 40 km from MG Road. BMTC's Vayu Vajra buses serve many districts, with the KIAS-9 route running to Majestic. For early departures, hotels in the north around Hebbal cut the transfer.
  • KSR Bengaluru City (Majestic): The station most trains use, opposite the Majestic bus stand and at the interchange of the Green and Purple metro lines.
  • Yesvantpur, Bengaluru Cantonment and SMVT: Some long-distance trains start or end at these other terminals instead, so check your ticket before choosing a hotel near a station.

Areas to consider

MG Road, Ulsoor and Richmond Town

Central shopping and dining in the old Cantonment, on the Purple Line. Rooms over Brigade Road or MG Road junctions can be loud at night; ask for a higher floor.

Indiranagar and Koramangala

Residential districts known for cafés and restaurants, popular with longer-stay visitors. Both sit some way from the main rail stations, so estimate rush-hour taxi times to wherever you need to be each day.

Whitefield and Marathahalli

The eastern IT corridor, practical for office visits, reached by the Purple Line to Whitefield (Kadugodi). Cross-city drives from here to the centre are slow, so book in the same corridor as the office you are visiting.

Hebbal and Yelahanka

Northern suburbs on the airport side of the city. Check your dates against the Aero India show, held at Yelahanka Air Force Base, when the area is much busier.

When to go

Summer runs from February to May, peaking at around 35 °C in April and May. The monsoon lasts from June to October, wettest from June to August, and showers are possible from May to November. November to January is cooler, with early mornings around 15 °C.

Before choosing a room

  • For a flight in the small hours, airlines may need bags checked in up to two and a half hours ahead; an airport-side hotel can be worth it.
  • The metro is the only reliable way around traffic, so check the walk to the nearest station rather than the distance in kilometres.
  • Corporate hotels in the IT suburbs may price breakfast, Wi-Fi or airport transfers separately; read what the rate includes.
