Mumbai travel guide

Mumbai stretches north from Colaba and the colonial Fort district at its southern tip, through central mill districts, to the western suburbs of Bandra, Juhu and Andheri near the main airport. Road traffic is slow, so suburban trains and the newer metro lines largely decide whether a hotel is convenient.

Getting there and choosing your base

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM): Terminal 1 handles domestic flights except Air India; Terminal 2 takes international flights and Air India. The Aqua Line metro links the airport with Bandra Kurla Complex and continues south to Colaba.
  • Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI): Opened in 2025 across the harbour, mainly for domestic flights. It is a long way from South Mumbai, so check which airport your ticket uses before booking a hotel near either.
  • CSMT, Mumbai Central, Bandra Terminus and LTT: Long-distance trains end at several different terminals. CSMT and Mumbai Central are close to South Mumbai hotels; Bandra Terminus and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus suit the suburbs.

Areas to consider

Colaba

Where most budget foreign travellers end up, close to the Gateway of India and the museums of South Mumbai. Small guesthouses here often occupy upper floors of old buildings; ask about the lift and whether the room has an outside window.

Fort and Churchgate

The old business district, among the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco buildings, near CSMT and Churchgate stations. Offices dominate the area, so check what is open nearby at weekends and in the evening.

Bandra and BKC

Bandra has cafés, sea promenades and its own rail terminus; Bandra Kurla Complex is a newer business district on the Aqua Line. Bandra West and the BKC side are separated by the railway, so confirm which side the hotel is on before assuming you can walk.

Juhu and Andheri

Closest to the main airport, with Juhu Beach and the Blue Line metro at Andheri. The city floods a few times each monsoon; ask whether the hotel's approach road becomes waterlogged.

When to go

October to February is the most comfortable period. March to May is hot and humid, and the June to September monsoon brings heavy rain and occasional flooding. Ganesh Chaturthi in August or September lasts ten days and ends with the largest immersion procession at Chowpatty, filling South Mumbai streets.

Before choosing a room

  • Space is scarce and even cheap rooms are expensive; compare floor areas rather than star ratings.
  • Budget hotels near stations such as Dadar vary sharply in standard, so read recent guest reviews before paying.
  • If you have a late arrival, check the terminal or airport against the hotel's location; Terminals 1 and 2 and Navi Mumbai are separate trips.
