Jaipur travel guide

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, was laid out in the 18th century by Sawai Jai Singh as a planned city; its walled core, painted pink since 1876, is the Pink City. Most hotels sit outside the walls in Bani Park, C-Scheme and along Tonk Road, with Amer Fort on the hills north of town.

Getting there and choosing your base

  • Jaipur International Airport, Sanganer: South of the centre, with daily domestic links and some flights from the Gulf and South-East Asia. Hotels on Tonk Road are on the airport side of town.
  • Jaipur Junction: The main station, where every train stops; a few also call at Durgapura and Gandhinagar (Jaipur). Bani Park guesthouses are a short ride away and several offer free pick-ups.
  • Sindhi Camp bus stand: RSRTC buses from Delhi's Bikaner House arrive here. Prepaid auto-rickshaws wait at both the bus stand and the station, and the Pink Line metro runs from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar inside the walls.

Areas to consider

Pink City (walled old town)

Puts the City Palace, Hawa Mahal and the bazaars on your doorstep for sightseeing on foot. The old-town streets empty once shops close, so judge the walk between the hotel and a main road after dark.

Bani Park

A residential area of guesthouses and converted family homes near the junction, calmer than the old city. Ask for a free station or bus-stand pick-up in advance rather than taking the first offer outside.

C-Scheme and MI Road

Central and well placed between the station and the walled city, with plenty of restaurants. Rooms overlooking MI Road or the larger junctions take on traffic noise, so request one at the back.

Amer

Staying near Amer Fort and Jal Mahal means an early start at the fort before tour groups arrive. City buses to Amer stop running in the evening, so plan how you will get back from dinner in town.

When to go

May and June are scorching, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and thunderstorms. Winters are mild by day, though nights can turn cold. Gangaur begins the day after Holi in March or April and runs for 18 days, with processions leaving the City Palace through Tripolia Bazaar.

Before choosing a room

  • Heritage hotels and havelis occupy older buildings; check for a lift and air conditioning if you are travelling in May or June.
  • Winter nights occasionally approach freezing, so ask whether rooms have heaters and extra quilts.
  • Hotels inside the walls may have no car access to the door; ask where taxis drop off and whether staff collect luggage.
