Udon Thani travel guide

Udon Thani is a commercial city in northern Isaan, about an hour by road south of Nong Khai and the Friendship Bridge to Laos. The centre is easiest to read from three roundabouts on Highway 2 and two landmarks: Central Plaza beside the railway station and the Nong Prajak lake park. The airport is only about 4 km out.

Getting there and choosing your base

  • Udon Thani International Airport (UTH): A shared minibus from a desk outside the terminal drops passengers at their hotels, and ride-hailing works here. Minivans to Nong Khai and the Laos border meet most flights, so you need not sleep in Udon to cross.
  • Udon Thani railway station: On the Bangkok–Nong Khai line, with an overnight sleeper from the capital. It sits next to Central Plaza and the main hotel cluster, so most central rooms are a short walk away.
  • Bus stations: Bus Station 1, near Central Plaza, handles Khon Kaen and many other regional services; Bus Station 2, on the western edge, takes buses from Loei and the north; Nakhonchai Air VIP coaches from Bangkok use their own terminal on Tahan Road.

Areas to consider

Central Plaza, UD Town and the station

Sensible for a short stay, with trains, buses, the night market and shopping all on foot. Sampanthamit Road and the alleys nearby hold bars aimed at foreign visitors; request a room away from the street if you want quiet.

Nong Prajak Park

Pleasant for longer stays, with jogging and cycling paths round the lake and a calmer feel. Measure the distance to Central Plaza and find out which numbered songthaew passes the door; route signs are in Thai.

Ring road and outskirts

Practical for drivers who want parking and quick access to day trips such as Ban Chiang. Public transport to the sights outside the city is poor, so arrange car hire or a driver before relying on an outlying hotel.

Near the airport

Only worth it for a late arrival or an early flight. Walking options are limited out here; confirm the hotel has its own restaurant and a free transfer to the terminal.

When to go

Winters are dry and warm, April is the hottest month, and the monsoon runs from late April to early October. From November to February the 'Red Lotus Sea' blooms on Nong Han lake, about 40 km away, and is best seen in the early morning. The Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo runs from 1 November 2026 to 14 March 2027 at the Nong Dae wetland, which is likely to push up demand for rooms throughout that period.

Before choosing a room

  • For dates during the horticultural expo, read the cancellation terms closely and ask about the distance to the Nong Dae site and whether shuttles run.
  • For the Red Lotus Sea, boats go out around dawn. Find out if the kitchen opens early enough to eat first and whether reception can book a driver.
  • Udon has a large expatriate community and plenty of monthly rentals. On longer stays, check whether electricity and cleaning are billed on top of the room rate.
