Getting there and choosing your base

Ferries from Phuket: Boats leave daily from Rassada Port, near Phuket Town, and land at Ton Sai pier. Flying into Phuket and crossing the same day works only if you land in time for a crossing; otherwise plan a night near the port.
Ferries from Krabi and Ao Nang: Services run from the passenger port outside Krabi Town and from Nopparat Thara pier near Ao Nang. Ferries also link Phi Phi with Ko Lanta, so the island fits easily into an Andaman route.
Ton Sai pier on arrival: There are no cars on the island; porters carry luggage by wheelbarrow and hotels often meet guests at the pier. A pickup on arrival does not guarantee a ride back, so ask about both directions.

Areas to consider

Ton Sai Village

Suits budget travellers and short stays, with the pier, shops, dive centres and most of the island's rooms within a ten-minute walk. Look east along the main street for cheaper guesthouses, and ask how far the room is from the busiest bars.

Loh Dalum

Suits groups who want the beach parties on the northern side of the isthmus. Fire shows and music carry on into the early hours here, so a light sleeper should avoid rooms facing the bay.

Long Beach

Suits couples who want a calmer beach and coral offshore while staying in reach of the village. Getting to Ton Sai means a walk along a footpath or a longtail boat; ask how guests get back after dark and whether boats run in rough weather.

Laem Thong

Suits travellers who want a quiet beach at the far north of the island and are happy to stay put. Accommodation here is expensive and the village is a boat ride away, so confirm whether transfers and meals are included.

When to go

The high season runs from about October or November to May, and room prices can double compared with the rest of the year. Rain falls mainly from May onwards, when ferries can be rough but rooms are far cheaper.

Before choosing a room

Ton Sai was rebuilt quickly after the 2004 tsunami and is densely packed; ask about noise from neighbouring bars and building work.
The island has only a small hospital and a couple of pharmacies, so travellers with medical needs may prefer a resort with its own boat to Phuket or Krabi.
Rooms near the beach cost much more than those a few lanes back; compare a sea-view rate with a garden room before paying the premium.
