Getting there and choosing your base
- Khon Kaen Airport (KKC): Several daily flights from both Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi, plus a few from Chiang Mai and Phuket. Taxis and ride-hailing are the simple way to a hotel.
- Khon Kaen railway station: Rebuilt in 2019 as an elevated station on the line to Nong Khai. Overnight trains from Bangkok arrive before dawn, which is worth bearing in mind when you book the first night.
- Bus Terminal 3 and the in-town stations: Most long-distance coaches, including those from Chiang Mai, end at Terminal 3 on the ring road about 8 km south of the centre. Buses from Udon Thani pass through the city first, so get off near CentralPlaza if your hotel is central.
Areas to consider
CentralPlaza and the city centre
Fits business trips and short stays, with the main mall, chain hotels and the minivan station on Ammat Road. The roads are wide and crossings few; check on a map whether you can reach restaurants without a long detour, or budget for ride-hailing.
Bueng Kaen Nakhon
Suits early walkers, with the lakeside path, temples such as the nine-tiered stupa at Wat Nong Waeng and an evening market. The lakeside market sometimes runs as a funfair, so ask about evening noise if the room overlooks it.
Kangsadan and the university
Good value for students, academics and visitors who like cafés and a student night market behind the Complex. Rates and availability move with the university calendar, so check whether your dates clash with graduation or major campus events.
Southern ring road near Terminal 3
Only practical for drivers and late-arriving coach passengers. The area around the terminal has few amenities, so confirm the hotel serves food and can arrange transport into town.
When to go
Like the rest of Isaan, Khon Kaen is cooler and dry from roughly November to February, very hot from March to May and wet from about May to October. The International Silk Festival and Red Cross fair at City Hall are held towards the end of the year, and Songkran in April brings large crowds. Book central hotels early for those dates.
Before choosing a room
- If you arrive on an overnight train before dawn, ask whether early check-in is possible or book the room from the previous night.
- During the silk festival and Red Cross fair at City Hall, ask whether nearby roads will be closed and how that affects taxi drop-offs.
- For day trips to Chonnabot's silk weavers or the climb at Phu Kradung, roughly halfway to Loei, check the hotel has parking or can arrange a driver.
