Getting there and choosing your base
- Tainan HSR station: About 10 km south-east of the centre, surrounded by new shopping malls. A local train from the linked Shalun station runs to Tainan station, and free shuttle buses go into the city, so a central hotel is still easy to reach after a high-speed journey.
- Tainan station (Taiwan Railway): Served by conventional trains, with frequent services to Kaohsiung. Every city bus route passes through here, which makes nearby hotels a practical base without a scooter.
- Kaohsiung and Taoyuan airports: Tainan's small airport mainly serves Kinmen, Penghu and a few regional routes, so most international visitors land at Kaohsiung and continue by train or road, or take the high-speed train south from Taoyuan.
Areas to consider
West Central District (Chihkan Tower, Shennong Street)
Suits walking between temples and historic sites, with small bars and snack stalls in the old lanes. Large temples hold processions with firecrackers at unpredictable hours, so ask how loud nights are if the hotel is next to one.
Around Tainan station and the university
Suits rail day trips and travellers relying on buses, since all city routes stop at the station. National Cheng Kung University lies off the station's rear exit, so check which side of the tracks the hotel is on.
Anping
Suits visits to the old fort, the Tree House and the seafood snack streets near the harbour. Anping is a bus or taxi ride from the old town, and the free sightseeing buses run only at weekends and on holidays, so plan how you will get back and forth.
Around the HSR station
Suits short stopovers and business visits that need an early fast train. The area is mainly malls about 10 km from the historic centre, so check what you can reach on foot for dinner.
When to go
Most visitors are domestic, so hotels are busiest at weekends, on Taiwanese public holidays and in school holidays. Summers are hot, with most rain falling from June to August. During Lunar New Year, Yanshui district in the north of the city holds a well-known fireworks festival, and the Lunar New Year and October holiday weeks bring fewer tour groups here than to better-known sights such as Sun Moon Lake.
Before choosing a room
- Fighter jets fly low over the city most days and temple parades set off fireworks; light sleepers should ask for a room away from the street and pack earplugs.
- Pavements are often blocked by shop goods and parked scooters, so with wheeled luggage, check how close a taxi can drop you to the entrance.
- Weekend and holiday rates rise with domestic demand, so a midweek stay is often cheaper for the same room.
