Getting there and choosing your base
- Taichung HSR station (Wuri): On the outskirts of the inner city; every high-speed train between Taipei and Kaohsiung stops here. You can change to a conventional train at the adjoining Xinwuri station, ride the Green metro line, or take the free shuttle bus downtown.
- Taichung Station: The Taiwan Railway stop in the Central District, on the inland Taichung Line. Some north–south trains take the Coastal Line instead and skip it, so check your train's route before boarding.
- Taichung International Airport (RMQ): A joint civil and military airport in Shalu, well outside the centre, with domestic flights to Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu and Hualien and some regional international routes. Many visitors fly into Taoyuan instead, which has buses to Taichung.
Areas to consider
Central District and Taichung Station
Suits rail travellers and visits to Taichung Park and the older streets. Some bus lines run only every hour or two, so look up the routes from the hotel to the places you plan to visit.
Xitun and Feng Chia Night Market
Suits night-market food and a student crowd around Feng Chia University. The market streets stay busy into the night, so if you want quiet, pick a hotel on the edge rather than inside the market area.
Calligraphy Greenway and the Science Museum
Suits cafés, shops and walks along the greenway, with the National Museum of Natural Science nearby. The Taichung Jazz Festival fills the greenway for about ten days, usually in October; check the dates if you need a quiet room.
Guguan and the Mountain Line
Suits hot-spring stays and hiking in the inland mountains. It is a long way from downtown and the road on to Lishan still needs a long detour, so arrange transport before booking.
When to go
Outside summer, Taichung has many sunny, dry days; most rain falls from May to August, and October to December is usually dry. July to September is the hottest period, while winters are mild. The Jazz Festival in October brings crowds to the western districts.
Before choosing a room
- Taichung is known for themed love motels with large baths; rooms are priced individually, so compare photos of the exact room you are booking.
- The coastal and mountain districts are far from downtown, so check that a 'Taichung' listing is not in an outlying district.
- If you arrive by high-speed rail with luggage, check whether the hotel is near a Green line station or on the free shuttle bus route.
