Getting there and choosing your base
- Gimhae International Airport (PUS): West of the city near Gimhae, with international routes plus domestic flights to Jeju and Seoul. The Busan-Gimhae Light Rail meets metro lines 2 and 3, and limousine buses also run into town, so check which of the two reaches your hotel without several changes.
- Busan Station: The main terminus for KTX trains from Seoul via Daejeon and Daegu, on metro line 1 between Nampo and Seomyeon. Gupo station, a smaller KTX stop on line 3 in the west, is the closer one to the airport.
- International ferry terminals: Ferries from Fukuoka, Shimonoseki, Osaka and Tsushima arrive at the port between Nampo and Seomyeon, near Busan Station. The domestic car ferry to Jeju stopped running in 2024, so plan to fly that leg.
Areas to consider
Haeundae
Suits beach holidays and travellers who want the city's larger upmarket hotels, most of which line Haeundae Beach. Sea-view rooms cost noticeably more than city-view ones, so price both for the same dates before paying for the view.
Gwangalli (Suyeong)
Suits evenings at the bars and cafés along a beach that faces the lit-up Gwangan Bridge. Bridge views depend on the floor and the way the building faces, so ask about the room's outlook instead of relying on the listing title.
Seomyeon
Suits short stays and travellers crossing the city often, since lines 1 and 2 meet here among offices, shops and late restaurants. The interchange is large, so note the exit number nearest the hotel before you arrive with luggage.
Nampo and Jagalchi (Central Busan)
Suits trips built around the fish market, the old port streets and the hillside lanes of Gamcheon village. The eastern beaches are a long metro ride away, so if you want sand most days, set that travel time against the lower room rates here.
When to go
Summers are hot and humid, and Haeundae hotels charge their highest rates in the beach season, roughly July and August; typhoons can strike from July to September. The Busan International Film Festival, centred on Haeundae in the first part of October, pushes prices up again. Winters are mild and snow is rare.
Before choosing a room
- Beach-front rates are higher at weekends than on weekdays, so if your dates can move, Sunday-to-Thursday nights usually cost less.
- Love motels, found near the bus terminals and across the city, can be a bargain, but they also sell short daytime stays; look at recent photos of the specific room before booking.
- If you are staying in Haeundae and flying in with heavy bags, check whether an airport limousine bus stops near the hotel, as the rail route needs a change from the light rail to the metro.
