Getting there and choosing your base
- Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB): In Lapu-Lapu on Mactan, the second-busiest airport in the Philippines, with domestic and international flights. Mactan resorts are a short drive away, while Cebu City hotels mean crossing one of the bridges to the main island, which takes longer at busy times.
- Cebu City port: The busiest passenger port in the country, with ferries to Bohol, Leyte, Mindanao and Manila. Hotels downtown or in the Colon district are the most practical before an early boat.
- North and South bus terminals: Buses for the north of the island leave from the terminal at SM City, and those for the south from the South Bus Terminal beside E-Mall. If you plan day trips along the coast, stay on the side of the city you will travel from.
Areas to consider
Colon and downtown Cebu City
Suits budget stays close to the Basilica del Santo Niño, the Spanish-era sights and the port. The streets here are crowded and noisy by day, so an upper-floor room is worth requesting.
Fuente Osmeña and Mango Avenue
Suits mid-range stays between downtown and the newer districts, with bars and clubs along Mango Avenue. Nightlife on General Maxilom Avenue runs late, so ask which side of the building the room is on.
IT Park and the Ayala area
Suits business trips, remote workers and upmarket restaurants. Serviced apartments and condo rentals are common here, so confirm whether daily housekeeping is included.
Mactan (Lapu-Lapu and Córdova)
Suits beach and dive holidays and a last night before a flight. Much of the coast is taken up by resorts, so check whether a property has its own swimmable beach or only a pool and jetty.
When to go
Sinulog, held on the third Sunday of January, fills hotels across the metro area and jams the roads, so book early or plan around it. Metro Cebu has a long wet season and a shorter dry one, with February to May the driest months; typhoons are less frequent than further north but do reach the island.
Before choosing a room
- Resort rates on Mactan may be quoted before VAT and service charge. Compare full totals when weighing a resort against a city hotel.
- For island-hopping or diving from Mactan, ask whether the resort runs its own boats or dive centre, or whether you must go to another jetty.
- An advertised airport shuttle may run only at set times. Check the schedule against your flight before relying on it.
