Getting there and choosing your base
- Kintetsu Nara Station: The end of the private Kintetsu lines from Osaka-Namba and Kyoto, a short walk from Kōfuku-ji and the park. Hotels near it put the main sights within walking distance.
- JR Nara Station: Served by the JR Nara Line from Kyoto and the Yamatoji Line from Osaka, so Japan Rail Pass holders arrive here. The walk to Tōdai-ji is noticeably longer than from Kintetsu Nara.
- Kansai (KIX) and Itami (ITM) airports: Nara has no airport of its own. Limousine buses run from both Osaka airports to the two Nara stations, which avoids changing trains with luggage.
Areas to consider
Around Kintetsu Nara and Higashimuki
Suits short stays with the park, the National Museum and the Higashimuki shopping street on foot. Listings often say only 'near Nara Station'; confirm which of the two stations is meant.
Naramachi
Suits travellers who want old merchant streets, small cafés and a guesthouse or inn stay. Many properties are converted machiya with steep stairs, futons and shared bathrooms, so read the room details closely.
Nara Park edge
Suits early starts at Tōdai-ji and Kasuga Taisha before the day-trippers arrive. Places beside the park are few and fill first, so secure the room before fixing the rest of the itinerary.
JR Nara Station area
Suits rail-pass holders and anyone heading on to Hōryū-ji or back to Osaka by JR. Check for a bus stop near the hotel; from this side, walking to the park and back each day adds up.
When to go
Book early for August, when Obon travel and the Nara Tōka-e candle festival (6 to 15 August) bring crowds, and for early November, when the Shōsōin treasures go on show at the National Museum. Christmas and New Year also sell out. Omizutori, the torch ceremony at Tōdai-ji's Nigatsu-dō, runs from 1 to 14 March.
Before choosing a room
- Ryokan usually price per person, often with dinner and breakfast; check which meals are included and the latest arrival time for dinner.
- In Naramachi guesthouses, confirm air conditioning and a private bathroom if you need them, especially for a summer visit.
- Using Nara as a base for Kyoto or Osaka? Check whether the hotel is nearer the Kintetsu or JR station, as the two lines run to different stations at the other end.
